Glan Llyn Phase 2B
Liz Lake Associates was commissioned by St Modwen Homes to prepare detailed landscape proposals to support the planning application for a development of 144 residential units. The site is located within the former Llanwern Steelworks site, in the north-west quarter of the Glan Llyn development in Newport, South Wales. Near the coastline on the south eastern side of the town, the site is situated on damp ground and subjected to harsh coastal conditions.
The residential development proposals on this parcel conformed to the broad aspirations of quality and sustainability across the entire Glan Llyn masterplan area, whilst having a distinctive character of its own, reinforced by the contemporary style of the residential buildings and the leafy tree lined streets. A robust palette of plants was selected to withstand the damp, windy and saline conditions, and planting was set out in a naturalistic style, characteristic of the South Wales coastal setting. Two Local Areas of Play were incorporated within the development, providing opportunities for natural play and open lines of sight to these spaces were retained to encourage natural surveillance.
