Liz Lake Associates worked in Partnership with Tooley Foster Partnership for Galliard Homes on this exciting development, delivering the innovative new 2.2 acre (0.89 hectare) mixed-use project (known as Royal Gateway and Caxton Works) which has redeveloped and regenerated the former Goswell Bakeries buildings and Moss Electrical warehouse located off Caxton Street North in Canning Town, E16. The development comprises of 336 exclusive apartments and penthouses, central to London’s most prolific regeneration master plan – The Royal Docks. The landscape proposals to Caxton Works include large podium landscapes with contemporary play features, significant areas of ornamental planting, alongside urban, pedestrian streets.
Liz Lake Associates were briefed with the realisation of a previous concept scheme for the landscape, problem solving and designing an amphitheatre over two stories in the podium deck. Each block has its own podium consisting of mixed age multi use play, specified to compliment the bold modern architecture and industrial heritage of the local area. This is reflected by the use of corten steel and ‘industrial’ style furniture with urban play equipment. The smaller roof terraces specific to the individual towers utilise a lightweight approach and post-industrial reclamation feel which encourages multi-species rich habitat and boardwalk access.
The streets and central boulevard to the development focuses on the pedestrianisation of the existing Hoy Street whilst reflecting high quality paving palette, in-situ street furniture giving a thriving market style surrounded by 13 commercial units, creating a vibrant new ‘cosmopolitan market’ atmosphere for the entire community. Focal to this is the ‘gateway’ signature to the development with a series of overhead corten steel gantry planters which link both blocks and bear the namesake signage. The pedestrianized street of creative, local retail and artisan space which give the new residential community structure, focus and vitality.
