Rugby Phase 4 – Carefully designed SuDS accepted as POS by Local Authority.

Landscape Architects, Liz Lake Associates have been involved in a long collaboration with St Modwen Homes on the Rugby Urban Expansion. The current four phases have involved working closely with the Architects, Engineers and Client, as well as the Local Authority, on this transformative project. The most recent triumph for the latest phase was the successful inter-disciplinary design coordination between LLA and the Drainage Engineers Waldeck. An attenuation basin was required to take surface water run-off and, due to the topography, it needed to be sited at the entrance to the scheme. Sensitive landscape design was therefore imperative to create an attractive arrival point; this phase of the scheme was also very compact and required as much open space creation as possible.

Detention Basin

With careful design detailing LLA put forward a solution with appropriate contouring and water tolerant planting to create a dished area which would provide open space for the development, but also serve as a seasonal water attenuation basin when needed. Quoting the newly published ‘Guidance for Outdoor Sport and Play: Beyond the Six Acre Standard’ by the Fields in Trust, October 2015, LLA advocated that “Open space can also provide dual use for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems” and thus the open space calculations made by the Local Authority were met for this scheme.
