St Martin’s Square is the principal civic space within Basildon and boasts a number of features of exceptional quality, including the 29m high free standing St Martin’s Bell Tower, which was the first all glass bell tower in the world.
As part of the detailed Public Realm Appraisal and Strategy Report for Basildon Town Centre, Liz Lake Associates was asked to look at St Martin’s Square which is owned by a number of stakeholders; this is clearly reflected in the current somewhat fragmented design which lacks a cohesive civic vision.
As part of the wider regeneration proposals for Basildon Town Centre there are proposals to move the market from its current location at Market Square to create a vibrant new street market within St Martin’s Square. Liz Lake Associates was appointed by Basildon Town Centre Management to work as landscape consultants with Haskoll Architects & Designers who were designing the new market.
Our brief was also to work with St Martin’s Church to re-design St Martin’s Gardens on consecrated ground in front of the church. We were also asked to achieve a single integrated civic identity of the highest quality for the wider Square.
A planning application for the relocation of the market has been submitted.
